•  The Five Sleep Disorders that Negatively Impact Student Learning & Behaviors in about 10 - 15% of all Students
•  MORE Older Students are sitting in the Classroom with Sleep Disorders than Younger Students (Sleep Disorders are a problem for ALL ages) !
•  Characteristics of Sleep Disorders for School Personnel to Watch For
•  The Negative Impact that these Sleep Disorders have on Learning, Behaviors, FCAT, and High School Graduation
•  A high percentage of students (~30%) referred to School Psychologists may have a Sleep Disorder causing the Learning or Behavior Problems
•  Research Findings Reporting Significant Improvements in IQ scores, Grades, and Behaviors after Correction of the Sleep Disorders
•  Simple Methods for Teachers, School Psychologists, School Nurses, and Guidance Counselors to Screen Students for these Sleep Disorders
•  Collaborative Process Needed between Educators and Physicians to Refer & Treat these Students with Sleep Disorders
•  Interventions and Treatments for Sleep Disorders

In the Pasco County School District and Tampa Bay, FL Region, we have been involved in a National Research Study on Sleep Disorders in 2002-03. After screening approximately 400 children who were referred to School Psychologists for learning or behavior problems, approximately 30% in this screening appeared to have a sleep disorder. Initial reports from parents and teachers of the students' whose sleep disorders were corrected indicated immediately improved behaviors (better cooperation, concentration, work production, and less impulsivity, aggressiveness, irritability, and resistance) after the sleep disorder was corrected. The achievement and GPA gradually improves if the child is not mentally handicapped.
